Rock Your Church

In the Sermon on the Mound, Jesus tells us of 3 things we are expected to do: give, pray and fast. 'When' is the key word, not 'if', clearly making it known that these are not optional Christian activities.

Giving is something we are to do, since God wants to give to us. "Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." Luke 6:38

Giving is something we should do privately.

But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly. Matthew 6:4-5

Praying is something we are to do, since talking with God is how we buid relationship with God.

When he prays to God, he will be accepted. And God will receive him with joy and restore him to good standing. Job 33:26

and we are to pray continually I Thessalonians 5:17.

Jesus even gives us an example prayer, to teach us how to pray: Matthew 6:9-13 Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Fasting is to help us subdue our flesh and be sensitive to the God's Holy Spirit. Consider an analog radio. When you dial in a radio station you hear a lot of noice, then as you get closer to the station, the noise fades and the signal appears, eventually the signal becomes clear and the noise fades. That's what fasting does. As you flesh is subdued, the spiritual and fleshly distractions (noise) fade and the 'signal' from God's Holy Spirit' comes in clearer and clearer (Acts 13:2). God's Holy Spirit is our helper. reminding us of things and teaching us things we need to know. You could say that fasting 'clears the pipes' so we hear when God is speaking to us.

We are to pick up our cross daily. The cross is where our will intersects with God's will. Fasting empowers God's Holy Spirit in helping us in our Christian walk.
